Valentine’s Day at Haalo – Rescheduled

In my lovely northern California town, we have a very special herbal apothecary called Haalo, which stands for “Health Alternatives for All Locals.” It is more than an herb shop, it is a veritable vortex of healing energy.

I am not able to perform at Haalo today because I caught a cold from my sweet daughter. Stay tuned for another date at Haalo in March!

In the meantime, please accept this free download of “You Are Loved” from my heart to yours:

May Love surround you and penetrate you, multiply within you and glorify you today and every day!

Candlelight Vigil: After Pulse, Orlando FL

Please join me tomorrow night in downtown Nevada City to share in community healing with:

  • Silent moments for collective remembrance
  • The lighting of candles to honor the dead, the wounded, their families, and all marginalized communities dealing with both the abject grief and horror of this tragedy and the political backlash associated with it
  • The creation of a central memorial altar to place candles, flowers, rainbow paraphernalia, and other symbolic objects as a focus for our love and compassion in this hard time
  • Speakers from the general local community, the faith community, and the youth community
  • Live music and possibly other performances

I will be performing 3 of my original songs, “Butterfly,” “Last Long Blue Day,” and if there’s time, “Garden Gate.”

August2015

New Song: “Nothing to No One”

In music therapy, we use the “iso principle,” the same principle behind homeopathy: “Like cures like.” My intention with this song is to meet the listener with a matched vibration in order to dissolve it and let the truth of reality in: we are never truly alone, though sometimes we feel as though we are or wish to be.

I recently got inspired to record it when I read a post from a woman who expressed her deep despair about the demands of being a mother. This woman bravely expressed her complete disinterest in being a mother, though she thought she wanted to become one at first. How many of us mothers have had this feeling from time to time? I know she’s not alone, but she must have been feeling incredibly isolated from a loving tribe who could help her navigate the murky and mysterious waters of motherhood. In any case, her brave sharing on a secret Facebook group I’m in reminded me of this song I wrote a while back when I was going through a time when I was feeling like I had nothing more to give to the world.

I hope this song will be helpful for those who need to “break bonds” with unhealthy patterns, people or relationships in their lives. I invite you to feel the emotion behind this song, embrace it and let it pass so that an awareness of interconnectedness can rise up in your consciousness and lift your spirits. I wrote it years ago, but it still has potency today.

Enjoy and feel free to leave a comment with your impressions.

Lyrics:

V1: Let me go, for I desire nothing else. Let me gone and nothing to no one.

Until spring comes, I can only imagine flight, but for now, I’m buried in the ground.

CHORUS: Nothing, nothing, nothing to no one.

Ooooh, oh I am sinking down now.

V2: Oh my love, would you dance with the one who no longer walks in the sun? Are you looking for your own resurrection? I dance alone with darkness and moonlight to guide my steps. I dance alone, my victory is elusive.

CHORUS

V3: Do not rescue me, sweet lover, do not save me this time, oh my sweet, sweet lover. Let me go, for I desire nothing else. Let me gone and nothing to no one.

New Review of “Pearl” by UK music blogger, Flo Bannigan

FloBanniganOn her “Angry Baby” music blog based in the UK, Flo Bannigan writes, “‘Pearl’ is the sort of song that should be the soundtrack to a movie scene. I couldn’t help but picture a character riding a bike down the road in the rain… Catherine’s loose, dreamy vocal style is vaguely hypnotic, reminding me of a gentle, folk version of Maria Muldaur for the 21st Century.” Read more and receive a free download of “Pearl” by subscribing to Flo’s blog: http://ow.ly/RWqGk

Thanks, Flo for the sweet write-up! I love the scene you imagined to fit with Pearl – riding a bike in the rain – yes, that is the feeling! A agree, there is a melancholy bent to many of my songs. I think my next album is going to be more upbeat, we’ll see!

Upcoming Performance at Give Peace a Song – International Day of Peace Celebration

Give Peace a Song

My first live performance since the “Right Here Now” CD Release Concert will be on Sunday, September 20th, 2015 at the “Give Peace a Song” event in historic downtown Nevada City, California. Hope to see a great turnout for peace! More about the event from organizer, Lorraine Reich:

In commemoration of the International Day of Peace, the Peace Center of Nevada County hosts a community event to bridge the unrest and violence of the world with our visions for peace and social and environmental justice. The “Give Peace a Song” event provides a platform for local artists to display art that brings art and politics together in most creative ways. There are many reasons why we should care about art — first and foremost because artists have a lot to say, and through their art we are engaged in ways that expand our view of the world. Some say that art necessarily changes the world, but at the very least we are transformed in our thinking, concepts and world views. The program will feature local song writers and musicians sharing with us their expressions on these times with lively songs and music. Performers will include Catherine Scholz, Nory Fussell, the Peace Chorus, Jeffrey Gottesman, Bob Polucha, and more.

There will also be a number of local community leaders who will speak on various topics that impact our world today. Among the speakers are Sharon Delgado, Reinette Senum, Bill Drake, and unconfirmed is Joanna Robinson. The new “Utah Phillips Peace Bench” project will be announced at the event.

The Peace and Justice Center invites all people of faith, conscience, and goodwill in the spirit of nonviolence to come and join in speaking out publicly for an end to war, poverty, and environmental destruction. The event takes place from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Nevada City Veterans’ Hall at 415 N. Pine Street, Nevada City. For more information visit www.ncpeace.org or write ncpeace@sbcglobal.net. The event is free and open to the public, donations gladly accepted, and of course there will be free snacks and beverages.

What are you listening to right now?

What are you listening to right now? Ingrid Michaelson‘s song “You and I” is playing here on Pandora. I’ve really been enjoying her music lately. Along with Sara Bareilles, Ray LaMontagne and KT Tunstall, they are some of my favorites.

I’ve also been digging my Brazilian Radio channel on Pandora, which has, much to my enjoyment, somehow included UK artist Imogen Heap (who has a rad 3D website, btw) and the group Zero 7 (who don’t seem to have a website). I like listening to these grooves while I am working – they keep me relaxed, focused and inspired.

What are your favorite internet radio stations and why? Do you subscribe to Apple Music, Spotify, LastFM, and/or Google Play? Leave me a comment here with your thoughts!

What is your story with music?

Interviews with Catherine ScholzHow did you first come to love music? Do you have a defining moment that captured your attention and turned you into a fan of a particular artist? What is your story with music? Are you a musician yourself?

I’ve been asked lots of questions about my music, my songwriting process, where my inspiration comes from and what my goals are. For the curious, these interviews (including live performances) with Elisa Parker, Che Greenwood and April Miranda on my local radio station KVMR have been archived here: https://www.catherinesmusic.com/interviews/.

It seems like music has always been a part of my life, starting with piano lessons, singing in church choirs, playing euphonium in bands and wind ensembles, majoring in music in college and performing my own material in coffee shops and venues across the United States. Sometimes I joke that music is “the only thing I didn’t quit!”

Though there have been diversions along my path, music lives on through me and through my kids. My 13 year-old son, Nathan, is a budding percussionist and Bridget, my 4 year-old daughter, is destined to become a singer in some new genre yet undiscovered. She starts kindergarten soon and I will be more freed up to explore my music again.

Now, after taking a year off to form a new family constellation, I am getting back to the business of marketing my music and I’m excited to launch my new vision of putting together a European Tour in 2016. I have fond memories of performing in Europe as a teenager and in my 20’s. Stay tuned for more details as they evolve!

Oh and by the way, today is my birthday! I’m 41 years young! Happy Birthday to all the fabulous Leo’s! My birthday gift for you is the promo code to download Right Here Now directly from my website for free. Lyrics to Fast and Pray

Fast and Pray – lyrics and music by Catherine Scholz

Dearest lover, if there ever was a doubt in my mind, last night it disappeared.

Do you remember the summer’s fog that found us naked in the night against all that we feared?

Well I have found that place again but now it’s inside and no matter how dark the waters I swim I’ll remember the well of my power within.

And no matter how long winter’s worst day I know how to wait, fast and pray.

No matter how long winter’s worst day, I know how to wait, fast and pray, fast and pray.

Dearest lover, if there ever was a doubt in my mind, last night it disappeared.

Do you remember the shooting stars that found us lying on our backs just talking?

Well I have found that place again but now it’s inside and no matter how dark the waters I swim I’ll remember the well of my power within.

And no matter how long winter’s worst day I know how to wait, fast and pray.

No matter how long winter’s worst day, I know how to wait, fast and pray, fast and pray.

Dearest lover, if there ever was a doubt in my mind, last night it disappeared.

Do you remember our first kiss that let us helpless except during those moments?

Well I have found that place again but now it’s inside and no matter how dark the waters I swim I’ll remember the well of my power within.

And no matter how long winter’s worst day I know how to wait, fast and pray.

No matter how long winter’s worst day, I know how to wait, fast and pray, fast and pray.

Take it Easy Lyrics

Take it Easy – lyrics and music by Catherine Scholz

Carol Ann, she went to sleep and never woke up. She never woke up to the morning. She never work up to the sound of tomorrow. She never woke up to try. And to try is to remember all the reasons she can’t touch, all the reasons she can’t fathom, all the reasons she forgot.

Carol Ann went to work and never woke up. She never woke up to what’s real. She never woke up to the possibilities. She never work up to cry. And to cry is to remember all the seasons she left untouched, all the seasons she can’t recover, all the seasons she forgot.

Carol Ann, she went home and she was alone. She never knew how alone she was. She never knew it could feel good.

And to feel good is so easy when she just lays her body down. She just takes it easy, babe, she just lets it go and I know love ain’t easy babe but you got me tryin. You got me seein’ all the options now so take it easy, babe. Take it easy, babe.

Lyrics to Expectations

Expectations – Lyrics and Music by Catherine Scholz

I’m changing again, I’m losing my skin in this  transformation.

I loved you within and now I’ll love you without expectations.

I saw this through once, I saw through this twice in my imagination.

You gave me the time to make up my mind, I give you a standing ovation…

You’re welcome to call anytime at all…

Lyrics to Crossing Over

And I have come to the shoreline to sit on a mound of sand with my legs in the grass. A smile has found my face again.

Sometimes I feel like that tugboat pulling my past behind.

Sometimes I feel like a honeybee tasting the sweetness of life.

But right now, I am the swallow, a messenger of two worlds.

I’m unlimited and I am crossing over.

Stand still, be with this.

Remember to breathe.

If you’ve got to move, move your body mindfully.

Pay attention to this breath right now.

Listen past your senses for the soundless sound, for the soundless sound.

Hu, Allah.

And I have come to share my story, to sing for you my friends.

With my feet on the ground, new life has found these hands again.

Sometimes I don’t think about it, I used to all the time.

Sometimes I go a little bit crazy, can’t escape my mind.

And right now I’m being truthful ’cause I’ve got nothing, nothing to lose.

I’m unlimited and I am crossing over.

Stand still, be with this.

Remember to breathe.

If you’ve got to move, move your body mindfully.

Pay attention to this breath right now.

Listen, won’t you listen for the soundless sound, for the soundless sound?

Hu, Allah.
